Eye-Fi - Explore Video Adventure

Ever dream of uploading your photos and videos right after you record them? The makers of Eye-Fi have developed an SD card that will do just that. Your images and video can be wirelesly uploaded to your photo or video sharing website. Yes, that means no more lugging the laptop and air card to a rally, picnic or vacation - all you have to do is point and shoot - Eye-Fi does the rest!

The Explore Video SD card automatically geo tags photo for all you geo-cachers out there.


Was very excited about this wireless technology being brought to the consumer level. Until I ran into one small snag - the card was unusable with a Nikon Coolpix P2. This is the only camera I own that uses SD cards to store images and video. Frak. What to do? Tomorrow my new point and shoot arrives, a Canon Powershot SD789 IS. Video review will be uploaded to Flickr.

Business Cards by Moo

Pictured above are my new Moo Business Cards created from select photos from my Flickr collection. They are printed on recycled card stock making a sturdy and unique business card. The colors of the printed images remain true to the original photos and the images are nicely scaled to the size of the card.

Tokina Lens Test

While the democrat controlled House and Senate are busy finding ways to waste taxpayer dollars in social engineering projects, instead of actually using the money to better the lives of average Americans. I have been doing my part to stimulate the economy by researching and purchasing a Tokina 12-24mm lens from a small, family run photography store. Quite frankly, I know better how to spend my money than the Obama/Pelosi/Reid/Franks gravy train, especially when it comes to photography equipment.

Out of the box, the lens felt solid with a good weight. I spend a few days reading tips and techniques for shooting with an ultra-wide lens. However, you simply have to jump in and get wet in order to appreciate this lens. I joined the magnificent Neocon for a late morning photo shoot at Philadelphia's 30th Street Station. The station is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and boasts a spectacular art deco design. A perfect venue to work with a new ultra wide lens. I have to say the workers at the station were welcoming to our photographic efforts. I plan to present photos taken at the shoe shine shop to the owner. You can view the rest of my photos HERE.

Like Peanut Butter for Chocolate

I've had my eye on the Canon EOS 40d for quite some time and decided to snap on up before we are all forced to spread our wealth around for our own good.

What a sweet camera, especially when matched with Canon's EF 28 to 135mm USM lens. I'm looking forward to shooting with this combination very soon! I've been tinkering with the camera using a 50mm f1/8 lens. The camera has all the features I'm used to using with the Canon XT, but the organization of the settings on the 40d is vastly different. Getting used to the new gear will require numerous trips to Longwood and Winterthur Gardens.

PSP Photo XI

This past Sunday, I upgraded my existing PSP-7 image editor to Corel's PSP XI. The difference in functionality between the two versions is unbelievable. I've worked with more types of image editing/manipulation in 5 days with PSP XI than in the 4 years that I've used PSP 7. The discovery of an online PSP users group was also helpful in figuring out the process of image editing using PSP software.

So far, I have to give this image editor two thumbs up. It is a reasonably priced, fairly easy-to-use program in which you can acquire the techniques used today in image editing and manipulation. Who knows, as your skills increase, Reuters might offer you a position in their company :)

Canon XT Review

Longwood

Over the past two weekends, I've made some room in my weekend schedule to visit both Longwood and Winterthur with the objective of trying out my new dSLR - the Canon XT. In addition, I brought along my Canon EOS Rebel SLR and Nikon Coolpix P2 for comparison.


Just a few observations from the field:

The camera is smaller than my Canon EOS. There has been critism over the small size of the XT, yet as I hold the camera, my index finger falls naturally over the shutter button. No problems here.

It is surprsingly heavy for its size, especially when I attach the telephoto lens. This is no vending machine camera, it is a sturdy little camera.

It is quickly becoming apparent that I need to use a tripod when shooting with the telephoto lens. This was never an issue when used with the film SLR and I'm thinking about purchasing a IS telephoto lens for the dSLR.

The battery life so far is excellent. I've only recharged it once since receiving the camera. As the winter approaches, we will see how the battery handles the colder temperatures.

The Canon Rebel XT dSLR

Purchased this digital SLR tonight and am loving it already. The menu items are arranged similarly to that of my retired Canon A80, so I am finding no difficulty in taking pictures and adjusting the settings. My first picture is posted below..well, its not my best work...but it is dark outside and the dog is being uncooperative and refuses to sit, stay or heel. So, I'll take what I can get! It looks as though I'll be heading out to Winterthur this weekend to see what this camera can do. Stay tuned, folks.
