30-year-old highway patrolman Officer Patrick McDonald, an eight year veteran of the force, was killed and fellow patrolman Officer Richard Bowes, 35, was wounded during a shooting in North Philadelphia Tuesday afternoon.
Authorities say the details surrounding the circumstances of the shooting are preliminary, but said it happened at about 1:21 p.m. after Officer McDonald responded to a report of a man with a gun and called for backup.
Officer McDonald's death brings the number of officers killed in the line of duty in the past year to four.
"Officer McDonald joins Officer Gary Skerski, Officer Charles Cassidy, Sergeant Stephen Liczbinski and Officer Isabel Nazario as one of our guardians who gave their lives in the service of this city during recent years," Mayor Michael Nutter said.
I'm still trying to discern what benefit to the city the Mayor brought back from his tax payer funded vacation to the recent DNC Convention. Quite frankly, Mayor Nutter, I'd like a refund - you can send it to the upcoming Officer McDonald Memorial Fund.
